NSOD63046He played God a couple of times in the movies, but he never mentions that as he hosts a new series “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman” (National Geographic Channel, 9 p.m.) in which the actor flies around the globe to find clues to the creator.

He begins by studying the afterlife, a journey that takes him to the pyramids, Jerusalem, the Ganges River, New York and his own Southern hometown. He seems to be genuinely interested in the topic but never takes himself too seriously.

There’s a lot of music awards shows each year, but it’s rare when two of them compete on the same night.

The 51st Academy of Country Awards (CBS, 8 p.m.) from Las Vegas features performers Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Cam, Florida State Line, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerina, Eric Church and Sam Hunt. And Dolly Parton teams up with Katy Perry for a duet. Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley host.

On the “iHeartRadio Music Awards” (TNT, 8 p.m.), meanwhile, Chris Brown, Fetty Wap, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Pitbull, DNCE, Zayn and Maroon 5 are among the performers. Jason Derulo hosts.

Opening day for baseball season lasts all day with St. Louis at Pittsburgh (ESPN, 1 p.m.), Toronto at Tampa Bay (ESPN2, 4 p.m.) and the Mets at Kansas City (ESPN, 8:30 p.m.).

The women’s Final Four is today with Oregon State vs. Connecticut (ESPN, 6 p.m.) and Washington vs. Syracuse (ESPN2, 8:30 p.m.).

“The Walking Dead” (AMC, 9 p.m.) closes its sixth season in a 90 minute episode, which introduces the villain Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who carries a barbed wire-wrapped baseball bat called Lucille.  It’s followed by the usual “Talking Dead” (AMC, 10:33 p.m.).

A fifth season starts for “Call the Midwife” (PBS, 8 p.m.), accompanying their recently restarted “Grantchester” on “Masterpiece” (PBS, 9 p.m.), in which a professor dies in a suspicious fall, and “Mr. Selfridge” (PBS, 10 p.m.), in which Harry courts twins.

The raucous sixth season of “Shameless” (Showtime, 9 p.m.) ends with Fiona’s wedding day. Things are likely not to go smoothly.

Richie is a little more strapped for cash than usual on “Vinyl” (HBO, 9 p.m.).

Muslims in America is the next issue tackled on “The Carmichael Show” (NBC, 9 p.m.).

You may wish the political season is over but for “The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show”(Showtime, 8 p.m.), it is. Tonight is the final episode covering the primaries; it will return for the conventions in July.

A string quartet is among the pint sized entertainment on “Little Big Shots” (NBC, 8 p.m.).

The eight season begins for the celebrity genealogy series “Who Do You Think You Are?” (TLC, 9 p.m.), which begins with Aisha Tyler.

Carmen Electra, RJ Mitte, Ashley Hamilton and Omarosa are on “Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry” (E!, 10 p.m.).

Home cooks compete to win the $50,000 grand prize in the second season finale of “All-Star Academy” (Food, 9 p.m.).

The first season of “The Real Housewives of Potomac” (Bravo, 9:15 p.m.) comes to an end.

Jack’s mom visits on “When Calls the Heart” (Hallmark, 9 p.m.).

The third and final part of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (Bravo, 8 p.m.) reunion lets the men talk as well.

Homer tries to find Smithers a boyfriend on a new episode of “The Simpsons” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

A 12th season starts for “Cutthroat Kitchen” (Food, 10 p.m.).

Jesse goes to see Adam’s play on “Girls” (HBO, 10 p.m.), but doesn’t want to run into Hannah.

Michelle needs help to build her charter school on “Togetherness” (HBO, 10:30 p.m.).

“60 Minutes” (CBS, 7 p.m.) takes a look at Germany’s superior prison system.

Paulette Goddard is star on Turner Classic Movies tonight with a double feature of “The Young in Heart” (8 p.m.) and “Kitty” (10 p.m.).  . What no “City Lights”?

At midnight comes a couple of rare black silent movies,  the 1920  “Within Our Gates” (TCM, midnight) “The Symbol of the Unconquered” a print of which was found in Spain, and the 1921 “The Symbol of the Unconquered” (TCM, 1:30 a.m.), a print of which was found in Belgium.

Later still comes two from Wim Wenders, “Wings of Desire” (TCM, 2:30 a.m.) and “Alice in the Cities” (TCM, 4:45 a.m.).

NBA action includes Oklahoma City at Houston (ABC, 3:30 p.m.) and Portland at Golden State (NBA, 8 p.m.).

Hockey has Boston at Chicago (NBC, 12:30 p.m.) and St. Louis at Colorado (NBC Sports, 8 p.m.).
