There has been no less than three shows about time travel announced by broadcast networks for next season — added to a couple that are already on. But how viable is time travel?
A new series, “Genius by Stephen Hawking” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings), looks into it as the first task on the science-based series tackling big questions, starring the famous subject of 2014’s “A Theory of Everything.” A second episode at 10 p.m. looks at whether there might be life elsewhere in the universe.
It’s a fascinating final four on “Survivor” (CBS, 8 p.m.) — three strong women and a wily and likable older Japanese gentleman. A few more immunity challenges and then a vote before a jury with a lot of grudges (and injuries — a record number of players were pulled from the game this season by medical staff). The million dollar winner will be announced a few minutes into the third hour’s reunion show at 10, when you see what the players look like unstarved.
Finales are everywhere tonight, from “The Middle” (ABC, 8 p.m.) where there’s a middle school graduation in the season seven finale, to “The Goldbergs” (ABC, 8:30 p.m.), where there’s a hazing scare in the season three finale.
The second season finale of “Empire” (Fox, 9 p.m.) promises big action not to mention further fallout from last week’s episode.
The seventh season finale of “Modern Family” (ABC, 9 p.m.) has Jay trying to go back to work.
In its second season finale, “Black-ish” (ABC: 9:30 p.m.) has a salute to the 70s sitcom “Good Times.”
It’s a finale, too, on cable, for “VH1 Family Therapy with Dr. Jenn” (VH1, 8 p.m.).
“Royal Pains” (USA, 10 p.m.) begins its eighth and final season with a politician needing medical care.
The show may be canceled, but “Nashville” (ABC, 10 p.m.) still gets Elton John to guest star, performing with Gunnar.
A new “Nature” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) focuses on an animal hospital for endangered animals in the Guatemalan jungle.
On “The Americans” (FX, 10 p.m.), an indiscretion from Paige’s past returns to threaten the family.
An ex of “Rosewood” (Fox, 8 p.m.) causes problems.
Oliver and Diggle try to rescue Thea on a new “Arrow” (The CW, 8 p.m.).
Alex has a dying wish on “Heartbeat” (NBC, 8 p.m.), a show that will die too after this season.
Rowena makes her move on “Supernatural” (The CW, 9 p.m.).
LuAnn moves in with Sonja on “The Real Housewives of New York City” (Bravo, 9 p.m.).
The last “Chicago” series still here is “Chicago P.D.” (NBC, 10 p.m.).
“Lopez” (TVLand, 10 p.m.) needs a new opening act.
The Yellow Kid resurfaces on “Pawn Stars” (History, 10 p.m.).
Politics get dirty on “The Soul Man” (TV Land, 10:30 p.m.), too.
Turner Classic Movies is all about mountain men tonight with “Jeremiah Johnson” (8 p.m.), “Across the Wide Missouri” (10:15 p.m.), “The Mountain Men” (midnight), “Yellowstone Kelly” (2 a.m.) and “The Last Frontier” (4 a.m.).
The NBA playoffs have Oklahoma City at Golden State (TNT, 9 p.m.).
In the Stanley Cup playoffs, it’s Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay (NBC Sports, 8 p.m.).
Baseball includes Boston at Kansas City (MLB, 2 p.m.) and Washington at Mets (ESPN, 7 p.m.).
