Skipping a week means a week late salute to the music of Mose Allison, who died on Nov. 15 a few days after his 89th birthday.
On a Black Friday show, we heard his music, as well as interpretations of his songs by The Clash, The Who, Blue Cheer, The Yardbirds, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison and Leon Russell, who had died a couple of days earlier Nov. 13 at 74. So there was a set of his songs and some of his production work for Joe Cocker.
Then we settled into a set of The Band and its guests who played its swan song concert on a Thanksgiving 40 years ago tonight. It became an iconic rock movie, but the set emphasized songs from the evening that weren’t part of the film or initial recordings.
We closed with Ray Davies’ seasonal song and the lingering melody of Ragnar Kjartansson’s “The Visitors,” which plays on a loop at the Hirshhorn Museum in a current show. And by the show’s end came word that a third music figure had died — Pauline Oliveros, the experimental performer who invented the term “deep listening.”
