Shot on a reservation in eastern Oklahoma, most of its talented young central cast are from Canadian tribes. They gathered in Beverly Hills for this summer’s odd TV Critics Association press tour. Odd because while the cast and creators were there on the stage of the International Ballroom as usual, the reporters were scattered and remote on computers to beam in their questions.
This sometimes led the cast to talk among themselves, particularly when the connections weren’t going well. (But they often talked among themselves as if reporters weren’t there in the past as well).
“Basically what we were all looking for was the reality of our communities and making sure we were telling the truth,” says Devery Jacobs, who plays a tough girl named Elora.
“We all hit it off,” said Lane Factor. “It felt like you are talking to some cousins you haven’t seen in a while.”
And, Paulina Alexis who plays the most deadpan character of the gang, Willie, added “Yeah, we’ve got our dysfunctional uncles here, too,” pointing to Waititi and Harjo.
