We’re taking a night-by-night look at the new fall season of broadcast TV, which frankly is not full of a heck of a lot of new titles. And some of the titles, as we see tonight, already sound pretty familiar.
NEW SHOWS
“FBI: International” (CBS, 10 p.m., tonight, moving to 9 p.m. next week). Can you stand a full night of “FBI” shows and tis spinoffs? Dick Wolf, who is behind these shows (and has done a whole night of “Chicago” shows for NBC) thinks so. Set in Budapest, the team investigates cases around the world. At least they don’t carry guns. Luke Kleintank, Heida Reed and Vinessa Vidotto star.
“Our Kind of People” (Fox, 9 p.m., tonight) is an openly soapy serial about life among the upper class African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard. When an outsider Yaya DeCosta) tries to enter high society with her Black hairstyling business, she’s rebuffed at first but may be more part of its ruling family than people realize (though it’s clearly obvious to viewers; in fact, it’s a similar plotline to the rebooted “Gossip Girl”). It’s tedious and over the top and seems like it should be a Tyler Perry production, but it’s in part from Lee Daniels. Morris Chestnut, Alana bright, Nadine Ellis and Joe Morton also star.
“La Brea” (NBC, 9 p.m., Sept. 28). The season’s big new sci-fi series begins as a huge sinkhole near the Los Angeles tarpits swallows a number of people, who don’t die in hot oil, but find themselves in an unexplained new landscape trying to get out. Likewise its creators will probably spend its time writing its way out of this paper bag. With more of the wan disaster vibe of “Under the Dome” than “Lost,” it still features wandering wolves and prehistoric birds. Natalie Zea, Jon Seda and Ione Skye are part of the cast.
“Queens” (ABC, 10 p.m., Oct. 19). Essentially the same plot as the comedy (and much better) “Girls5Eva,” this one, which also involves Lee Daniels, revolves around an En Vogue / SWV / TLC / Xscape – type girl group that decides to reunite and perform years later. This one has a couple of experienced performers in it, with Eve and Brandy joining Nadine Velazquez and Nature Naughton.
RETURNING SHOWS
“FBI” (CBS, 8 p.m., returns tonight); “The Resident” (CBS, 8 p.m., tonight), “The Bachelorette” (ABC, 8 p.m., returns Oct. 19), “The Flash” (CW, 8 p.m., Nov. 16), “Riverdale” (CW, 9 p.m., Nov. Nov. 19), “FBI: Most Wanted” (CBS, 9 p.m., tonight), “New Amsterdam” (NBC, 10 p.m., tonight)
OF NOTE ON CABLE
“Chucky” (USA and Syfy, 10 p.m., Oct. 12). The murderous doll who starred in seven movies is now the center of a new series with Brad Dourif reprising his role as the doll’s voice. Also back in their old roles are Fiona Dourif and, eventually, Jennifer Tilly. It will track what happens when the doll is sold second hand in a suburb.
