The life of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins who died in March at 50 will be marked with a pair of tribute of concerts this month, the first of which will be broadcast live from London’s Wembley Stadium and featuring the rest of the band as well as the drummer’s family.
“The Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert” (Paramount+, 11:30 a.m.; CBS, 10 p.m.) will be streamed live and an hour long version will be broadcast on network TV. Travis Barker, Martin Chambers, Stewart Copeland, Liam Gallagher, Omar Hakim, Chrissie Hyde, The James Gang, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, Brian May, Krist Novoselic, Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Wolfgang Van Halen, Supergrass, Roger Taylor and Lars Ulrich are among the recording artists set to appear. Special appearances are also planned from comedians Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock. A second tribute concert is planned for L.A. Sept. 27.
Another rock hero gets a big showcase as Baz Luhrmann’s vibrant but long (2 hours, 40 minutes) bio pic “Elvis” (HBO, 8 p.m.) makes its premium cable debut. The flashy style of Lurhrmann actually suits his subject; it’s amazing the classic Americana sets from Memphis to Vegas were recreated entirely in Australia. Austin Butler does a better than expected version of the King, mixing his own vocals with original recordings there are also some nice performances from Gary Clark Jr. as Arthur Cruddup, Shonka Dukureh as Big Mama Thornton, Alton Mason as Little Richard, and Yrrola as Sister Rosetta Tharpe. And under a whole lot of prosthetics, Tom Hanks provides a suitably sinister Col. Tom Parker.
Also getting its premium cable debut tonight is last year’s twisty Texas Gulf Coast tale “Red Rocket” (Showtime, 8 p.m.), starring Simon Rex.
