Ready for another prequel? “Supernatural” is long gone but the new series “The Winchesters” (CW, 8 pm.) concerns the parents of the brothers that old series, when they met in the 70s. Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger star. Jensen Ackles — Dean from the old series — narrates.  

It’s paired with another new series, “Professionals” (CW, 9 p.m.), starring Tom Welling as a security operative hired by an eccentric billionaire played by Brendan Fraser to find out why a satellite failed to launch in French Guiana. 

Actor Wendell Pierce provides the voice of the historic central figure of “Becoming Frederick Douglass” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings), a biography of the famed writer and leader who escaped slavery at 20. It’s from Stanley nelson and Nicole London, who were behind the PBS Harriet Tubman documentary last week. 

Jeremy Lin’s dizzying rise in the NBA boosted the Knicks and cheered Asian Americans who had a sports hero for the ages. The heights of his 2012 season a decade ago is recalled in the new sports documentary “38 at the Garden” (HBO, 9 p.m.).

It’s a significant night for sports in general with the official start of the NHL season. Games include Tampa Bay at Rangers (ESPN, 8 p.m.) and Vegas at Kings (ESPN, 10 p.m.).

Also, the World Series inches closer with the start of Major League baseball’s divisional series. Games include Philadelphia at Atlanta (Fox, 1 p.m.), Seattle at Houston (TBS, 3:05 p.m.), Cleveland at Yankees (TBS, 6:30 p.m.) and San Diego at Los Angeles (Fox Sports 1, 9:30 p.m.).
