HBO’s answer to “Downton Abbey,” “The Gilded Age” (HBO, 9 p.m.) returns for its second season, with its depiction of social climbing among New York’s Fifth Avenue upper crust in the 1880s shifting somewhat to summering in Newport. Carrie Coon’s Mrs. Russell is determined to be accepted in high society if she has to build her own opera house to do so.

Her characterization is so rigid, though — something that also limits Christine Baranski’s ridiculously uptight matron. With so much attention given to period setting and fashion, you’d hope they’d upgrade the dialogue and predictable storylines. Still, the historical soap helps fill a traditional Sunday night void.
