Prerecorded before a trip to England, this week’s Capital Radio began with a smattering of London songs, and included the Beatles in their first appearance on Ed Sullivan, the impresario who was born this day in 1901. Other highlights from Sullivan’s show ranged from Johnny Rivers to the Kessler Twins, and there was a rumination on Ed from George Carlin.
Birthdays were celebrated for St. Vincent, turning 44; Joseph Arthur, 55; and others both this day, from Confucius to Brigitte Bardot to Ethel Rosenberg. Also: Ben E. King, Kenny Kirkland, Sean Levert and Tuli Kupferbert of The Fugs.
Before it was all over, though, there were songs of September and of the first days of autumn. Closed with a preview of Tom Morello’s big Power to the People concert at nearby Merriweather Post Pavilion this weekend.
