It’s the 125th Tournament of Roses Parade (HGTV, NBC, Hallmark, 11 a.m.) with Vin Scully as grand marshal and 50 carefully prepared all-flower floats going down the streets of Pasadena with the theme “Dreams Come True.”
Of all of the coverage, HGTV has commercial free presentation and commentary from Nancy O’Dell along with the network’s Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott.
It helps herald Stanford vs. Michigan State (ESPN, 5 p.m.) in the Rose Bowl. Other bowl games today include Nebraska vs. Georgia (ESPN2, noon), in the Gator Bowl, UNLV vs. NorthTexas (ESPNU, noon) in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, South Carolina vs. Wisconsin (ABC, 1 p.m.) in the Capital One Bowl, LSU vs. Iowa (ESPN, 1 p.m.) in the Outback Bowl and Baylor vs. Central Florida (ESPN, 8:30 p.m.) in the Fiesta Bowl.
The other big sports event today is the NHL Winter Classic, the annual outdoor hockey game, this year with Detroit vs. Toronto (NBC, 1 p.m.) at the big University of Michigan stadium.
New Years Day means Strauss in the annual concert from Vienna on “Great Performances” (PBS, 2:30and 8 p.m., check local listings). Julie Andrews hosts.
If the yelling at children in “Dance Moms” (Lifetime, 9 p.m.), here’s another oversize personality trying to mold impressionable young girls and their overbearing mothers. “Kim of Queens” (Lifetime, 10 p.m.) features a former Miss Georgia turned pageant coach Kim Gravel.
Also new tonight, “Lone Target” (Discovery, 10 p.m.), another survivalist dropped in the middle of nowhere show, except this time elite military and law enforcement are after him in what we hope is just a game. The guy being tracked is Joel Lambert, a former Navy SEAL.
New year, old episodes: It’s reruns top to bottom on network TV.
Not sure what you were drinking last night, but it probably wasn’t paint. That’s the favorite thing of a woman kicking off the fifth season of “My Strange Addiction” (TLC, 10 p.m.). A second episode at 10:30 p.m. features a dude who eats mattresses.
A new year means a new “HGTV Dream Home 2014” (HGTV, 8 p.m.), this one on a golf course in Truckee, Calif.
The new “Tattoos After Dark” (Oxygen, 11 p.m.) follows the wild after hours activities at a couple of Los Angeles tattoo shops when they color outside the lines.
Turner Classic Movies visits lost worlds tonight with “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (8 p.m.), “The Lost World” (10:15 p.m.), “The Valley of Gwang!” (midnight), “She” (2 a.m.) and “The Lost Continent” (4 a.m.).
Not a bad tie-in to the morning: “The Hangover” (TBS, 11 a.m.).
