One of the first popular movies was also one of the first Westerns. Edwin S. Porter’s 1903 classic 12 minute “The Great Train Robbery” (TCM, 6:15 a.m.) is the first of what will be more than 100 Westerns presented on Turner Classic Movies all day Tuesdays and Wednesdays all month.
There have been enough Westerns made to organize into categories, such as tonight’s showcase of John Ford classics starring John Wayne. Most of them are well known: “Stagecoach” (8 p.m.), “The Searchers” (9:45 p.m.), “Fort Apache” (midnight) and “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” (2:15 a.m.). Less well known, perhaps, is the 1949 Western “3 Godfathers” (4:15 a.m.).
Westerns during the day today include the 102-year-old silent “The Squaw Man” (6:30 a.m.) and “The Vanishing American” (8 a.m.) and then “Cimarron” (10 a.m.), “The Squaw Man” (12:15 p.m.), “Annie Oakley” (2:15 p.m.), a different version of “Three Godfathers” (4 p.m.) and “The Plainsman” (6 p.m.).
Michael K. Williams — the former Omar Little on “The Wire” — returns to look at the world of underground exchange on the new series “Black Market” (Viceland, 10 p.m.). First up is the world of stolen cars in Newark.
