New series about women in magazines have had mixed results. “Good Girls Revolt” was canceled after one season on Amazon Prime, but “Younger,” which is only peripherally about publishing, continues in its fourth season. And “Ugly Betty” had a good run.
Now comes “The Bold Type” (Freeform, 9 and 10 p.m.) about a trio of young women working at a very Cosmo-like magazine. Which figures, since it’s “inspired” by the life of Joanna Coles, chief content officer of Hearst Magazines. Katy Stevens of “Faking It” (and “American Idol” before that) stars as a rising writer, alongside Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Sam Page and Matt Ward. Melora Hardin is the tough editor. The series is full of urgent walk-and-talks and infused with pop music, kicks off with two episodes.
The new series accompanies the fifth season return of “The Fosters” (Freeform, 8 p.m.), where protests continue over Anchor Beach charter’s privatization.
The 88th MLB All-Star Game (Fox, 8 p.m.) originates from Miami. It’s surprising how the fun of these things can be ruined by announcers.
The three part “The Story of China” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) concludes with a look at events that made modern China.
The rise of Snoop Dogg, the establishment of Interscope Records and the East-West rap war is covered in the third of the four episodes of “The Defiant Ones” (HBO, 9 p.m.).
Television keeps alive the story of Jack the Ripper, the latest variant is “American Ripper” (History, 10 p.m.), an eight episode docs-series about a Chicago man who thinks his great-great grandfather was Jack the Ripper. Exhuming and DNA testing are in the future.
Wilmer Valderrama hosts the new “The Hollywood Puppet S#% Show” (Fuse, 10:30 p.m.) in which gossip infotainment is rendered by 3-D printed puppets. It comes after the third season premiere of “Fluffy’s Food Adventures” (Fuse, 10 p.m.), staring the comedian Gabriel Iglesias.
They’re still auditioning on “America’s Got Talent” (NBC, 9 p.m.).
Elimination duels conclude on “World of Dance” (NBC, 10 p.m.).
Smurf has a challenge on “Animal Kingdom” (TNT, 9 p.m.).
“Adam Ruins Everything” (TruTV, 10 p.m.) returns for a second season, as does “Still the King” (CMT, 9 p.m.) which stars Billy Ray Cyrus as a former one-hit-wonder on the country charts turned Elvis impersonator turned pretend minister.
Christina moves into her own apartment on “Born This Way” (A&E, 10 p.m.).
A deadly foe returns on “Wrecked” (TBS, 10:30 p.m.).
Artists on “Face Off” (Syfy, 9 p.m.) are inspired by Dante.
“Outdaughtered” (TLC, 9 p.m.) returns for a third season as the quints hit the terrible twos at Valentine’s Day.
Also returning for its second season is another baby-wrangling series “Rattled” (TLC, 10 p.m.).
A hurricane causes commotion on “Deadliest Catch” (Discovery, 9 p.m.).
Meek Mill’s “Cold Hearted” is acted out on “Tales” (BET, 8 p.m.).
Getting gold is tough in “Devil’s Canyon” (Discovery, 10 p.m.).
Hannah and Adam continue to clash on “Below Deck Mediterranean” (Bravo, 9 p.m.).
To tie in with its sister station’s debut of “Will” Monday, Turner Classic Movies presents variations on Shakespeare with “West Side Story” (8 p.m.), Kenneth Branagh’s “Much Ado About Nothing” (10:45 p.m.), Kurosawa’s take on “Macbeth,” “Throne of Blood” (1 a.m.); Orson Welles’ Falstaffian salute “Chimes at Midnight” (2:15 a.m.) and Liz and Dick in “The Taming of the Shrew” (5:30 a.m.).
