While Joni Mitchell’s surprise appearance at Newport Folk Festival last summer was captured mostly by fans’ phones, there’s a much better production surrounding her performances at the end of the 90-minute “Joni Mitchell: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings).
Her performance of Gershwin’s “Summertime” and her leading the singalong to “The Circle Game” culminate at the end of the tribute earlier this month that featured strong performances from Annie Lennox, James Taylor, Cyndi Lauper, Angelique Kidjo and the ringleader and enabler Brandi Carlile. Also performing: Diana Krall, Graham Nash, Marcus Mumford, Herbie Hancock and Ledisi. I wrote about the event soon after it was taped at Constitution Hall in D.C.

The Women’s NCAA Basketball Final Four is played in Dallas with LSU vs. Virginia Tech (ESPN, 7 p.m.) and Iowa vs. South Carolina (ESPN, 9:30 p.m.). Winners play for the championship Sunday afternoon. UConn isn’t in the finals this year, but two of its past biggest stars, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, provide their own commentary to tonight’s games under the title “The Bird and Tuaurasi Show” (ESPN2, 7 and 9:30 p.m.).
