The second season of the music documentary series “Music Box” (HBO, 8 p.m.) kicks off with Sam Jones’ “Jason Isbell: Running with Our Eyes Closed,” a film nearly as honest and arresting as Isbell’s own music. It provides insight into the making of his latest album, a look back at his fraught family life and rapid rise in Americana, his downfall with drink and even current bumps in the road with his remarkable, similarly musical wife, Amanda Shires. The pandemic throws a wrench into the album release — and the film — but provides more life lessons for the songwriter who is serious about using them in his striking music.

A second music documentary tonight looks at the legacy of musician and producer J Dilla on “The New York Times Presents” (FX, 10 p.m.).

Scott Yoo and flutist Alice Dade travel to Argentina to explore the tango-inspired work of Astor Piazzolla on “Great Performances” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings).

Kathryn Hahn stars in an eight-episode adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s bestseller “Tiny Beautiful Things” (Hulu, streaming), about a woman encouraged to become an advice columnist.

The seven-episode “Transatlantic” (Netflix, streaming) dramatizes the work of a group that helped thousands of refugees escape Nazi-occupied France. Cory Michael Smith and Gillian Jacobs star in the adaptation of Julie Orringer’s novel “The Flight Portfolio.”

Christian Later and Demian Bichir star in “Chupa” (Netflix, streaming), a film about a 13-year old who, while visiting his grandfather in Mexico, discovers a chupacabra in a shed.
