Olympics begin in earnest with competitions in dozens of events, from swimming and fencing to skateboarding and surfing to table tennis and shooting. It happens on a variety of networks, from NBC and USA to CNBC, E! and Peacock.  

Among the activities are men’s basketball with Australia vs. Spain (CNBC, 5:30 a.m.), France vs. Brazil (CNBC, 11:15 a.m.), Canada vs. Greece (CNBC, 3:15 p.m.) and Germany vs. Japan (USA, 8 p.m.).

Beach volleyball has U.S. vs. Cuba (NBC, 8 a.m.) and U.S. vs. Canada (NBC, 4 p.m.). 

Women’s field hockey has U.S. vs. Argentina (CNBC, 1:45 p.m.), 

Men’s soccer has U.S. vs. New Zealand (USA, 1 p.m.). 

Women’s volleyball has Italy vs. Brazil (USA, 7:45 a.m.) and U.S. vs. Argentina (USA, 1 p.m.). 

Handball has Spain vs. Slovenia (CNBC, 10 a.m.) and Denmark vs. France (USA 9:30 p.m.). 

Women’s water polo has Netherlands vs. Hungary (E!, 9 a.m.) and U.S. vs. Greece (USA, 9:35 a.m.).

One event with a medal game today is rugby with a bronze medal game (CNBC, 1 p.m.) and men’s final (NBC, 1:45 p.m.). And Olympic coverage knocks off “Saturday Night Live” tonight. 

Elsewhere, “Mammals” (BBC America, 8 p.m.) looks at whales, dolphins and aquatic mammals. 

Celeste Desjardins plays a journalist who returns to her hometown ice rink for a story in the made-for-TV romance “An Ice Palace Romance” (Hallmark, 8 p.m.). 

The BeBe Winans comedy “Mind Your Business” (BounceTV, 8 p.m.) ends its first season. 

The Michael Keaton-starring drama “Knox Goes Away” (HBO, 8 p.m.), which he also directed, is about a hit man who gets dementia. The film, which also stars Al Pacino, James Marsden and Marcia Gay Harden, makes its premium cable debut. 

Turner Classic Movies has a couple of films set in Scotland, “I Know Where I’m Going” (8 p.m.) and “The Green Years” (9:45 p.m.). The noir at midnight is “The Housemaid” (12:15 a.m.), followed by a couple of train chases, “Shanghai Express” (2:15 a.m.) and “Berlin Express” (3:45 a.m.). The midday musical is “Festival” (noon).

Baseball includes Yankees at Boston (Fox, 7 p.m.) and Oakland at Angels (MLB, 10 p.m.). 

Auto racing has the Sonoma Challenge (Fox, 6 bp.m.) and the Salem ARCA 200 (Fox Sports 1, 8 p.m.). 

There is third round play in the 3M Open (Golf, 1 p.m.; CBS, 3 p.m.).

It’s St. Louis vs. Boston (ESPN2, 5 p.m.) in the Women’s Football Alliance national championship. 

Canadian football has Winnipeg at Toronto (CBS Sports, 7 p.m.). 

“Austin City Limits” (PBS, 11 p.m.) has a 2022 repeat with Japanese Breakfast and Arlo Parks.
