Friday TV: Boxing Trainers, Opera, Sharks

Peter Berg turns on the camera and pretty much lets the action happen in hisnew series “On Freddie Roach” (HBO, 9:30 p.m.), following the famous boxing trainer of the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, left. Among his champs in the past have been Manny Pacquiao, Oscar de la Hoya and Mike Tyson. It has an unusual pairing, though: with “The Life and Times of Tim” (HBO, 9 p.m.).

Russian diva Anna Netrebko makes her debut in the Metropolitan Opera’s premiere of Donizetti’s opera “Anna Bolena” on “Great Performances at the Met” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings. The opera depicts the last days of Anne Boleyn, unlucky wife of Henry VIII. In addition to the Russian soprano, the production by David McVicar includes Ekaterina Gubanova, Ildar Abdrazokov, Stephen Costello and Tamara Mumford. Marco Armiliato conducts.

Mark Cuban joins the fulltime cast for “Shark Tank” (ABC, 8 p.m.) as it starts a new season hearing people’s proposals and bidding on their ideas. One of them is a new kind of water bottle designed by former NBA star Bill Walton.

It comes alongside a new season for the game show conducted by a news division, “Primetime: What Would You Do?” (ABC, 9 p.m.).

Gordon Ramsay tries to remake an eatery in Austin on a new “Kitchen Nightmares” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

Friday’s funniest show? “Portlandia” (IFC, 10 p.m.).

It’s one of the last weeks of “Chuck” (NBC, 8 p.m.), which ends altogether next week.

Strange doings on the other side of “Fringe” (Fox, 9 p.m.) on a new episode. As usual.

Former governors Jennifer Granholm, Buddy Roemer, Matt Lewis and Sen. Bernie Sanders are among the scheduled guests on a new “Real Time with Bill Maher” (HBO, 10 p.m.).

Calvacade of Mark Wahlberg: “The Italian Job” (TMC, 8 p.m.) plays opposite the remake of “Planet of the Apes” (Fox Movie Channel, 8 and 10:30 p.m.).

Martin Balsam gets the spotlight tonight on Turner Classic Movies with “Al Capone” (8 p.m.), “The Anderson Tapes” (10 p.m.) and “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” (midnight).

In NBA action, it’s Lakers at Magic (ESPN, 8 p.m.) and Timberwolves at Clippers (ESPN, 10:30 p.m.). In college hockey, it’s Michigan at Notre Dame (NBC Sports, 7:30 p.m.).
