The frigid weather inspired a show that ran from “Cold, Cold, Cold” to “Cold, Cold, Heart.” Played some QUicksilver Messenger Service to showcase Dino Valenti, before moving to other songwriters of the era, Tim Buckley, Paul Simon and especially Leonard Cohen.
I only learned about the death of Phil Everly while on the show, so didn’t have any Everly Brothers to play except for a cover from Simon & Garfunkel. But I had planned some tributes to two other stars who died during previous New Year’s holidays — Ricky Nelson, who died Dec. 31, 1985 at 45, and Hank Williams, who died Jan. 1 1953 at just 29. Both were on their way to perform in shows.
