How_To_Dance_In_Ohio_stillAny teenager’s first formal dance can be awkward and anxiety producing, but even more so for those on the autism spectrum.  Director Alexandra Shiva’s sensitive “How to Dance in Ohio” (HBO, 9 p.m.) looks at a program in Columbus that navigates teens and young adults through the social cues they otherwise might have missed.

The participants are aware and often quite articulate about their conditions, and all seem willing to try to adjust, even though they still may not want to talk to you. Still, getting people averse to touching to slow dance can be a challenge.

Many engaging personalities emerge, though Shiva seems to concentrate on the women — whose struggles may seem more difficult because geeky males may be more prevalent in the culture — they can just play computer games and fit right in.

Once they make it to their event, though, everybody feels like celebrating.
