PeaceOfficer“Independent Lens” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings) begins a two-night examination into violence in America by focusing first on the militarization of police forces in the United States.

“Peace Officer” by Brad Barber and Scott Christopherson tells a lot of tales, from the rise and misuse of SWAT teams nationwide to specific cases that show the abuses. It could have well been a film entirely about William “Dub” Lawrence, a model sheriff in Davis County, Utah, who put together the first SWAT unit in the state, only to find it shooting down his son-in-law unnecessarily in 2008. Now a sewer line repair man, he spends his spare time reconstructing that event, railing against militarized police force, and building a plane. He’s an original.
