The tenth month is upon us, so Capital Radio features a dozen songs about October from U2, Mercury Rev, the Indredible String Band, Wolf People and Amy Winehouse.

Meteorologically minded, we reflect the recent deadly hurricane with a series of songs, some reflecting back to the Great Mississipi Flood of 1927, the Ohio River Flood of 1937 and the Lake Okeechobee overflow of 1928. Refrained from playing Bob Dylan’s “Hurricane” but had three other of his songs that actually mentioned flooding.

Celebrated birthdays of Steve Reich (86) and Lindsay Buckingham (73) and marked the birthdays today of departed songwriters John Perry Barlow and Johnny Burke, as well as rocker Eddie Cochran. It was also the anniversary of the deaths of Woody Guthrie and Skip James, two years apart.

Closed with a preview of Bruce Springsteen’s upcoming album of soul classics, with one of his covers followed by the originals of others he’ll do.
