Started with a six song salute to Hanukkah before the annual Christmas onslaught — more than 50 songs about the holiday, or in the case of a couple of tunes, about a more generic holiday.
The Linda Lindas had the newest song; Bessie Smith the oldest. In between were some rockers from The Fleshtones, Beach Bunny, The Kinks, Big Star, Elvis Presley and the Zambonis, soul from Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Detroit Junior, Otis Redding and Nathaniel Mayer; country from George Jones, Johnny Preston and Brenda Lee, and some relatively contemplative numbers from Hiss Golden Messenger, Brandi Carlile and Juliana Hatfield.
There were two songs each from the holiday albums of The Minus 5 and Josh Rouse. Plus the usual classics from The Pogues, The Ramones and James Brown.
Here’s the link to what I played on the radio today; the playlist follows.
