It was Charlie Parker’s “Now is the Time” that helped inspire a key line in Martin Luther King’s 1963 speech at the March on Washington. So The Bird begins the 2023 MLK Day edition of Capital Radio that includes songs of hope and striving from Bobby Womack, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Patty Griffin, John Fahey and Sam Cooke, among others.

Included three choice cuts from Curtis Mayfield, and two each from Nina Simone and the San Francisco post-punk trio Monument to Masses. And a couple of cuts from the 1972 Wattstax concert. 

Closed with birthday salutes to Sade (64), Barbara Lynn (81), Ronnie Milsap (80) and that weirdo Jim Stafford (79).
