He never got an Oscar either, but Steve Lawrence had a No. 1 hit and a long career with his wife Eydie Gormé before he died last week at 88. A trio of his songs kicked off Capital Radio today.
We had a few new things from The Black Keys, Pernice Brothers and Cedric Burnside before we surveyed the guitar career of Harvey Mandel on his 79th birthday, and his work with bands like Canned Heat, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and The Rolling Stones. Later came the birthdays of Nina Hagen, turning 69, and Cheryl Lynn, 67.
In between, there was a long musing about memory and remembrance, from George Jones and Elvis Costello to Elliott Smith, Dean Martin and Bloc Party, among others.
Closed with a foreshadowing of St. Patrick’s Day approaching this Sunday, with tunes from the Dirty Knobs to Van Morrison with a special emphasis on The Pogues.
