Amy Winehouse would have turned 43 today, so we celebrated the birthday of the influential singer, who died at 27 in 2011. It was also the birthday of Fred “Sonic” Smith, Nas, Barry Cowsill, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Ivory Timon of the Detroit Emeralds, Morten Harket of a-ha, sax men Steve Berlin and Oliver Lake, and guitarists Paul Kossoff of Free, Alex St. Clair of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, and Ed King (concentrating on his Strawberry Alarm Clock days instead of Lynyrd Skynyrd).
Songwriter Mae Boren Axton, born this day in 1914, had a few of her songs played, but none so famous as “Heartbreak Hotel.” We paid tribute to Cheetah Chrome, who died Sunday at 71, with music from his two bands, Dead Boys and Rocket from the Tombs. Finally, Emmys night meant more than a dozen songs about the television.
