The grisly story has been told numerous times in the last half century. Now documentarian Errol Morris (“The Thin Blue Line,” “The Fog of War”) tries his hand with a new film. “Chaos: The Manson Murders” (Netflix, streaming) which furthers the notion of author Tom O’Neill that Manson may have learned his brainwashing techniques to make family members carry out murders  from a secret  CIA program that depended on LSD use. Morris knows how to spin a yarn, even if there isn’t much material evidence to carry it.

The newest SpongeBob SquarePants movie concentrates on the green, one-eyed side character and restaurant owner Sheldon J. Plankton. His plan for world takeover in “Plankton: The Movie” (Netflix, streaming) is upended by his wife, a waterproof supercomputer named Karen. All the other usual characters take part in the saga as well. 

A seventh season starts for the racing sports documentary series “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” (Netflix, streaming). 

From South Korea comes the new series “When Life Gives You Tangerines” (Netflix, streaming) following a couple through four seasons of life on an island. 

If you remember the tawdry old reality series “Gigolos” you may be interested in a true crime series about the one who found a dead woman in his room on “Sin City Gigolo: A Murder in Las Vegas” (Paramount, 9 p.m.). 

“Power Book III: Raising Kanan” (Starz, 8 p.m.) begins its fourth season with Unique alive and out for revenge. 

Still pulling up to the drive-ins with horror double features is “The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs” (Shudder, 9 p.m.), starting a new season, with shows appearing on the first Friday of each month. 

“Fire Country” (CBS, 9 p.m.) finds a wellness check turn into a full house fire. 

Steve drops a pan he can’t quite retrieve on “Happy’s Place” (NBC, 8 p.m.).

“Dateline” (NBC, 9 p.m.) has a jailhouse interview with Lori Vallow Daybell, convicted of murdering two of her children. 

Modern forensics are used to investigate the murder of two young women decades ago on “20/20” (ABC, 9 p.m.).

“Shark Tank” (ABC, 8 p.m.) is pitched personalized bird food. 

A petty officer is found murdered and frozen in a seafood and sex trafficking operation on “NCIS: Sydney” (CBS, 8 p.m.).

“S.W.A.T.” (CBS, 10 p.m.) goes after violent museum robbers. 

Whitney Cummings is guest judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (MTV, 8 p.m.), where there’s a comedy tribute to past queens Kandy Muse, Mistress Isabelle Brooks and Plane Jane.

“Toya & Reginae” (WEtv, 9 p.m.) help someone update a dating profile. 

A new discovery causes some further questions on “The Way Home” (Hallmark, 9 p.m.). 

“Gold Rush” (Discovery, 8 p.m.) issues an ultimatum.

A young gun captures three giant bluefin in a day on “Harpoon Hunters” (Discovery, 9 p.m.).

“Outback Opal Hunters” (Discovery, 10 p.m.) have a broken motor on their bulldozer. 

The top 10 Ufo projects are enumerated on “Ancient Aliens” (History, 9 p.m.). 

A Friday night series on Turner Clasic Movies this month is mixups, which begins with films about mistaken identities with “North by Northwest” (8 p.m.), “Lover Come Back” (10:30 p.m.), “Being There” (12:30 a.m.), “Purple Noon” (2:45 a.m.) and “Top Hat” (5 a.m.).

Earlier,  TCM has a day at the races with ”Sporting Blood” (6 a.m.), “Glory” (7:30 a.m.), “The Story of Seabiscuit” (9:15 a.m.), “International Velvet” (11 a.m.), “Pride of the Blue Grass” (1:15 p.m.), “The Rocking Horse Winner” (2:30 p.m.), “Saratoga” (4:15 p.m.) and, of course, “A Day at the Races” (6 p.m.).
