A smart standup and inventive creator of “SNL” musical extravaganzas, John Mulaney was never a particularly good late night comedy host. In the few times he’s tried it last summer on his ramshackle “Everybody’s in L.A.” it was the definition of hit and miss.
But it inexplicably got some awards so he’s back with his new “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” (Netflix, 10 p.m.), which will be presented live over the next 12 Wednesdays (the guy can’t commit; it’s another short run).
He’s got a good roster for his opening show tonight, though, with Michael Keaton, Joan Baez, Fred Armisen and Cypress Hill among the guests. Richard Kind will also be on hand as a kind of sidekick.
