Maybe Nick Hornby, the English writer, isn’t a good match with public television. His novel “Funny Girl” has been turned into a six-part series “Funny Woman” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings) about a beauty queen from Blackpool who wants to become a comic actress in London in the 1960s. Maybe after “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” it feels a bit flat. Certainly it’s hard to figure why Gemma Arterton’s character is so shunned at first (her accent?). It’s missing a c comedy edge as well, though the 60s soundtrack is swell.
It’s caps a full night of premieres on public twelevision, starting with a fourth seasons of the Victorian mystery series “Miss Scarlet and the Duke” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) with Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin, and the wholesome James Herriot adaptation “All Creatures Great and Small” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings) as it moves to Easter 1940 amid the war in Europe.
