The idea behind Nick Bilton’s documentary “Fake Famous” (HBO, 9 p.m.) is to reflect the world of Instagram influencers by choosing three random nobodies and making them look famous through extravagant photo shoots and buying lots of fake followers. Trouble is, the most famous real Instagram influencers are random nobodies to start with.

At any rate, of the three people he chooses, two eventually drop out for one reason or another and the third gets a lot of free stuff from companies who want a mere mention. There are a few interesting points about social media excess to be made before the pandemic puts a stop to lavish trips and puts things in perspective. 

The beginnings of the COVID crisis in China — now more than a year old — are explored on a new “Frontline” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings). 

“Groundhog Day” (AMC, 10 a.m.) gets a replay on its special day, and of course gets played again, at 12:30, 3, 5:30, 8 and 10:30 p.m.
