We began the Aug. 3 edition with the music of saxophone ace Plas Johnson, who recently died at 94 and whose work was on hundreds of recordings, none more famous than the theme from Pink Panther. He was also on a slew of other songs you might not have expected, from Sam Cooke to The Beach Boys, and both Nancy and Frank Sinatra.
We played the song from the new month, which was named after Augustus Ceasar. The hottest month of the year, it also set the stage for songs from Brian Eno to Neil Diamond. We paid tribute to Tony Bennett, born on this day on 1930, and also that of lesser known vocalist Eddie Jefferson. Both involved playing variations of “Body and Soul.” It was also the birthday of the a Stray Cat, the last Shrirelle standing, and the most obscure member of the Byrds.
We closed with some of the covers Bob Dylan was playing on his recent tour, and selections from the woman who opened the show we saw, Lucinda Williams.
