For the first live show in two weeks, there were a lot of recent passings of musicians to note on Capital Radio, starting with Glen Hansard and including Jeff Conolly of the Lyres, John Douglas of The Trashcan Sinatras, Arlene Smith of the Chantels and two influential electronica producers, William Orbit and David Z.
There were plenty of birthdays for Aug. 10 as well, including Ian Anderson (79!), Ronnie Spector, Bobby Hatfield, and both Jimmy Dean and bluegrass king Jimmy Martin.
But it was Leo Fender, born this day in 1909 who took up the most time, to demonstrate how much that has been accomplished with the solid body electric guitars he devised. So we heard five prime examples of the Telecaster, and another five of the Stratocaster.
