FALL TV PREVIEW 2011

We’re looking at the new shows coming to broadcast TV for the fall season, night by night. Tonight, there are a couple of new shows starting; two others won’t start until next month.

NEW SHOWS

“New Girl” (Fox, 9 p.m., today). Zoe Deschanel sparkles as the oddball nerdy-girl trying to get her life together after a big breakup. She rooms with some sympathetic guys with varying degrees of jerkiness and tries, tries again. But she tends to be the kind of person who breaks into made-up songs about their own lives. As previously reported, it’s a perfect match of creator – Liz Meriwether – and star and from the networks, it’s the best new show of the fall.

“Unforgettable” (CBS, 10 p.m., today). Poppy Montgomery dyes her hair red – the shade of Marilu Henner – in this twist in a crime procedural involving a detective with the unusual skill Henner famously does: To remember every detail of every day. Every new cop show needs a twist and that’s the one for this show, which also boasts a co-star in Dylan Walsh of “Nip/Tuck.”

“Ringer” (The CW, 9 p.m., started Sept. 13). Sarah Michelle Geller returns to TV in two roles — as twins. The ne’er do well sister takes her more successful sister’s place after a mysterious disappearance and the thrills are supposed to begin. But this much used storyline (most recently in ABC Family’s “The Lying Game”) moves a little clunkily and Gellar, for all of her popularity in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is not very appealing in either of the roles as the story moves along like the first half of a poorly made Lifetime movie.

“Last Man Standing” (ABC, 8 p.m., Oct. 11). Like some weird time warp, Tim Allen returns to a sitcom as if “Home Improvement” was never cancelled. This time instead of tools, he’s selling manly outdoor goods with a long suffering wife – Nancy Travis, who has played that role for others many times before. And he’s the father of girls, who complains that things aren’t right for men these days. Not good.

“Man Up!” (ABC, 8:30 p.m., Oct. 18). Even worse than the abovementioned show, (with which it will be paired) involves three guys who are all losing ground as men no matter their station in life: husband, the grown slacker and the lovesick, starring people who are not household names: Mather Zickel, Dan Fogler and Christopher Moynihan. Not funny.

RETURNING SHOWS:

“NCIS” (CBS, 8 p.m., tonight), “Glee” (Fox, 8 p.m., tonight), “90210” (The CW, 8 p.m., began Sept. 13), “The Biggest Loser” (NBC, 8 p.m., tonight), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS, 9 p.m., tonight), “Dancing with the Stars” results show (ABC, 9 p.m., tonight), “Raising Hope” (Fox, 9:30 p.m., tonight), “Body of Proof” (ABC, 10 p.m., tonight), “Parenthood” (NBC, 10 p.m., Sept. 13).
