Started with a second Springsteen cover song in as many weeks, a sleek soul hit that references Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. Went on to salute bassist supreme Pino Palladino, turning 65. With a sample of his work with Paul Young, D’Angelo and The Who.

But mostly the show was devoted to Bob Dylan’s impending new book “The Philosophy of Modern Song,” due out Nov. 1. The Times ran a couple of excerpts Sunday of his ruminations on two wildly divergent songs — “My Generation” and “Strangers in the Night.” I culled from the rest of his list of 66 songs he’ll deal with, managing to squeeze in 40, ranging from the well known (“Mack the Knife,” “London Calling”) to the most obscure (“Take Me from this Garden of Evil,” “The Old Violin”).

Also included a track from the most obscure face on his book cover.
