It doesn’t officially premiere until Sunday, but first full episode of the new series “Magic City” (Starz, midnight) gets a sneak preview tonight after “Spartacus: Vengeance” (Starz, 10 p.m.).
“Magic City,” from writer Mitch Glazer (“Scrooged”), stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the owner of a hotel in Miami Beach, with action beginning on New Year’s Eve 1958.
That makes for some period costumes and design, but in a seemingly more natural way than “Pan Am” or the much more formal “Mad Men.” But it’s got considerable more pizzazz than, say, the old NBC series “Las Vegas,” which it also resembles.
As action begins, unions threaten to ruin the holiday night performance by Frank Sinatra (who remains unseen), and Morgan’s character has to deal with a ruthless mob boss to fix the problem.
Two Billy Wilder films, “The Seven Year Itch” (TCM, 8 p.m.) and “The Lost Weekend” (TCM, 10 p.m.) before the 2006 documentary “Billy Wilder Speaks” (TCM, midnight).
Later it’s a couple of headbanging movies, “Stunt Rock” (TCM, 2 a.m.) and the animated “Heavy Metal” (TCM, 3:45 a.m.).
