Documentaries have been made about the intense rivalries between Red Sox and Yankees fans the devotees of Michigan football and that of Ohio State, or Duke vs. North Carolina.
But the new “Roll Tide – War Eagle” (ESPN, 8 p.m.) examines the heated and often hateful rivalry between two of the top football teams of the South, both in the same state.
Alabama and Auburn have been rivals for more than a century, and no matter how well their seasons are going, unless they win the annual anticipated game at the Iron Bowl, it is all for naught.
The film by Martiin Khodabakhshian does a good job summarizing each team’s legacy, with interviews that include Charles Barkley, Bo Jackson and Cam Newton.
Also, possibly the craziest Alabama fan is interviewed – the one who said he poisoned the famed Auburn oaks after he saw someone put a Cam Newton jersey on the statue of Bear Bryant, the storied ‘Bama coach pictured.
To gear up for Wednesday’s CMT Awards show, the morning anchor dons a cowboy hat to do a series of interviews. “In the Spotlight – Robin Roberts: Al Access Nashville” (ABC, 10 p.m.) finds her chatting with Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, and last year’s all-country “American Idol” finalists, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.
When getting the inside story of th Syrian protests, half the story is trying to get into the country. Richard Engel succeeded last week for an NBC report, tonight Ramita Navai does the same for a new “Frontline” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings).
Viktor Bout, who just last week was found guilty on four counts related to a conspiracy to kill Americans and U.S. officials, by delivering anti-aircraft missiles and aiding a terrorist organization, happens to be featured in the final episode of the four-part series “Women, War & Peace” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings).
The four part “The Witch Doctor Will See You Now” (National Geographic, 10 p.m.), examining unusual healing practices in other parts of the world, running all week, today finds the health benefits of a tall glass of cow pee in India. Piers Gibbon is the host.
As for “The Hunt for the Giant Squid” (National Geographic, 9 p.m.), you can’t miss it.
