Friday TV: Outer Space or Outskirts of Wyoming

With an evening kicking off with “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (TCM, 8 p.m.), you’d think the location for tonight’s Oscar series on Turner Classic Movies is outer space.

  • Instead, it’s where they contact the aliens, Wyoming, which was the setting for “The Big Sky” (10:30 p.m.), “Cat Ballou” (1:15 a.m.), “Portrait of Jennie” (3 a.m.) and “Broadway Hostess” (4:30 a.m.).

Marisa Tomei looks into a family murder caper on a new “Who Do You Think You Are?” (NBC, 8 p.m.).

Jerry Herman talks to the host of “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook” (PBS, 9 p.m.) and gives him a song he hadn’t previously released.

Amy Ackers plays a menace to men on a new “Grimm” (NBC, 9 p.m.).

What can “A Gifted Man” (CBS, 8 p.m.) do to get attention? Hostage situation!

Somebody thinks they can get rich quick with a cake mix for dogs on a new “Shark Tank” (ABC, 8 p.m.).

“Good Eats” (Food, 8 p.m.) looks at the powers of dark chocolate.

Ambassador Peter Galbraith, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Zanny Minton Beddoes, Reihan Salam and Mo Rocca are the scheduled guests on a new “Real Time with Bill Maher” (HBO, 10 p.m.).

Chef Ramsay’s plan for the Spin-A-Yarn Steakhouse in California on “Kitchen Nightmares” (Fox, 8 p.m.) should probably include a new name.

Among the iconic movies on tonight are “Blade Runner” (AMC, 8 and 10:30 p.m.), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (Bravo, 9 p.m.) and “The Jewel of the Nile” (HBO Family, 9 p.m.).

On a new “Portlandia” (IFC, 10 p.m.) a Portland band gets a new member and gains a groupie.
